Biography.

Gelson Martins is one the most promising players of the Portuguese league.  He played in one of the biggest football schools in the world where he was quickly noticed for his technical qualities, quickness and for his capacity to work hard.

 

Born in Praia, Cape Verde and later moved to Portugal at the age of eight.  He started his career in Portuguese football with `Futebol Benfica´at the age of 12.  He signed with the ´Academia do Sporting´ in 2010.  Gelson Martins was always one of the top stars in all of the juvenile and junior teams with over 30 matches played per season.

 

On March 24th of 2014, he was promoted to the lions´ B team and extended his contract until 2019, with a release clause of 45 million euros.  After an outstanding debut for Sporting B (6 goals in 40 matches, playing as a winger, midfielder and even as a right back), he joined the under 20 National team and was present in the World Cup in New Zealand, scoring two goals. Before that, he was a runner-up in the under 19 European Cup, losing in the final to Germany.


In that same season, he gained a vote of confidence from the first team´s coach, Marco Silva and bet on the youngster in two matches of the ´Taca da Liga.´ But it was in 2015 that Gelson Martins was promoted in definitely to Sporting´s first team, at the hands of the coach, Jorge Jesus. The young player played his first match in the league on the 14th of August of 2015, in a victory over Tondela, 2-1.  On the 15th of January of the following year, against the same adversary, Gelson scored Sporting´s 5000th goal of the competition.

 

Gelson Martins´ performances certainly catches the eye of those lovers of football, and there is no doubt in his potential. Still fresh in memory is his performance at Santiago Bernabeu where he shined against the colossus Real Madrid. Greatly applaud and receiving praise from the Portuguese and Spanish media where he was described as the new star of the football schools which also launched other players like Cristiano Ronaldo, Figo and Nani.

 

At this moment, the forward has a contract with the lions until 2021 and a buyout clause of 60 million, the team´s highest.
